Transliteration: Kladbishche pamyati zhertv devyatogo yanvaryaComment:
English
Memorial Cemetery to the Victims of 9th January
Comment: full name; main translationFormer Preobrazhenskoye Cemetery. The cemetery was founded in 1871 and named Preobrazhenskoye ('Transfiguration') Cemetery after the Сhurch of the Transfiguration of Christ that was located here. Several years later, the second part of the cemetery was opened for non-orthodox burials. It later became the Preobrazhenskoye Jewish cemetery (see the corresponding entry). In Soviet times the Preobrazhenskoye (Orthodox) Cemetery was renamed Memorial Cemetery to the Victims of 9th January, in recognition of the mass grave here for those who died on "Bloody Sunday"", the workers protest that sparked the 1905 Revolution."
